  • A new intake of students at our college inspired me to write this. (note: JCR is the Junior Common Room, “mess” if you like)

They start with a glass of sherry

Then it’s drinks in the JCR,

And it’s wine with their first meal

And free booze down the bar.

It’s no wonder some become alcoholic

    The students of Oxford colls

    Most have to be detoxicated

At the start of their Summer holls!

    ———-

I am not sure my college would be pleased at me posting that up, but it’s sadly true.

ps weekend those who have commented here but not on LP’s site, I will visit you from there.

  • Some detox might be a good idea when they go on holiday, instead of holiday turning into an even bigger binge than the steady drinking at school. Somewhat the same thing goes on in colleges in the U.S., even though many of the students are below the legal drinking age. There is always someone around ready and willing to supply drugs to the young.

  • They are so young and foolish, especially the weak ones.

I love your picture. You know you look a lot like Bob Hope.
I sat next to him on an airplane once when I was a kid. Out of Amsterdam airport… Schiphol is it?… yeah…

  • So true!  My mom was just telling me tonight about a young man at her college whose life was ruined when he got drunk out of his mind and fell off a 3rd story balcony.  He is forever messed up.  :(   So sad.

  • it is sad…there’s so much pressure put on young kids, not only to succeed, but to be ‘cool’ while doing it.

  • Sherry and wine with a meal, how very pleasant.

  • The right to destroy your brain the thing children envy most about adulthood. Nobody is sure if they’re ever ‘thinking straight’ so destroy the offending organ!.

I’ll be visiting all your sites a lot more often very soon. I’ve missed the wisdom of a popular, ‘dirty old man’. Hard to stay clean when you live on earth.

  • I never got into a habit of drink and found a husband with the same attitudes.  Actually, I’d like a glass of wine every day but, I forget so it doesn’t happen.  Habit is what makes a drunk and I guess I’ll never be one.  Bad habits I have, just not that one.

    Hoping you are doing well.

  • I suppose Oxford id known for that and Cambridge for queers and spies I always voted as a kid for Oxford to win the boat race do they still have that it was a big thing in my youth  men selling the favours at every street corner and nearly everyone bought one Cheers Marj
